P1010 - REFRACTION THROUGH A RECTANGULAR GLASS SLAB - 1.15

THE PHYSICS CAFE

CHAPTER TEN - LIGHT - REFLECTION AND REFRACTION

1.15 Refraction through a Rectangular Glass Slab**

Light travel: Air → glass slab → air and AB arm ║ CD arm

At arm AB - Air → glass slab – rare to denser – bends towards normal

At arm CD - Glass slab → air – denser to rare – bends away from normal

Important points

1.    Emergent ray – The ray which comes out from denser medium to rare medium

2.    AB arm ║ CD arm so ‘bending away from normal is equal to bending towards normal’ so emergent ray will be parallel to direction of incident ray.

3.    ∟i = ∟e

4.    ∟r1 = ∟r2

5.   Lateral displacement – Perpendicular distance between direction of incident ray and emergent ray
